Season’s Eatings: There’s More to Fall Flavors Than Pumpkin Spice
The arrival of fall brings with it football games, apple picking, walks through crunchy leaves and thick, cozy sweaters. For many, this is also a favorite season for eating, as menus make the switch to hearty comfort foods and seasonal produce.
Autumn is the perfect time to experience a host of rich flavors in everything from appetizers to desserts. Here are just a few of our favorite seasonal recipes!
‘Tis the season for tailgate fare. And after a summer full of picnic-friendly salads, hamburgers and hot dogs, it’s nice to indulge in savory snacks. Warm appetizers like crab dip and mini meatballs are always a hit on game day. For your next gathering, stretch your culinary muscles with other cool-weather recipes including a Baked Pumpkin Fondue, sweet-and-savory crostinis or a unique take on .
There’s nothing we love more on autumn weekends than a big pot of chili simmering on the stove all day. Whether you get creative with Pumpkin Chili, try to be healthy with Turkey or Meatless Chili, or amp up the heat with Traditional Chili, it’s always delicious — and leftovers can feed the family for days. But fall is also the season to expand your horizons and try other slurp-worthy meals. Warm up after an afternoon of raking leaves with a Hearty Lentil Soup, a flavorful French Onion Soup or a savory Vegetable Soup.
While pumpkin gets all the credit this time of year, it’s prime harvest time for other squash varieties, too. We love the simplicity of using spiralized butternut squash in place of traditional spaghetti noodles and pairing them with a rich brown butter and sage sauce or a hearty homemade pesto. If you want your squash to take a backseat to protein, try pairing butternut squash with apples and pork or making a flavorful acorn squash mash side dish.
With so many incredible flavor combinations, now is definitely the time to splurge on dessert. Always a classic, pumpkin bread is so simple and incredibly tasty, especially when paired with something unexpected like orange cream cheese. We also love recipes where fall produce takes center stage like Apple Crisp, Applesauce Doughnuts and Apple Turnovers. But we try not to play favorites and occasionally indulge in other seasonal favorites like Pear and Rutabaga Hand Pies and Sweet-Potato Meringue Pie.
We’re putting the finishing touches on our new fall menu. As usual, we’ll be featuring plenty of local produce in our seasonal recipes.
